Okey so in this tutorial we are going to create a split tone effect. The photo will be toned in two colors one for the highlights and one for the shadows, this is a common effect that you can play around with a lot on your own later! So lets go!
First you’ll need to open a photo into photoshop (you can achieve this effect in lightroom and camera raw but we are going to do it in photoshop). Maybe you have to process the photo thru ACR (adobe camera raw) maybe not depending on your normal workflow.
Then we need to make the image black and white (you can do this effect and not make the image black and white but then the photo will look cross processed). There are many different ways of turning a color photo into black and white but one easy way is to press cmd+shift+U or ctrl+shift+U. This will create a black and white conversion for you. If your not happy with the results you can always use a curves adjustment layer to fix that.
Next we’ll do the effect, the best way to do this is to go with a color balance adjustment layer so that you can go back and change things if you aren’t happy with the results. When you open color balance you’ll need to choose a tonal range to work within (shadows, midtones and highlights, we are going to use the shadows and highlights). So if we start with shadows you wanna go down and drag the sliders for red, green and blue to mix in a color in the shadows. When the shadows look good you’ll do the same with the highlights. There is so many possibilities with this effect so try a bunch of settings!
Here are two of my images I played aroud with when trying this effect:
